Fort Albany Women’s Shelter Transitional Housing

Client Fort Albany Women’s Shelter (FAWS)
Location Fort Albany, Ontario
Type New Build – 3plex & 4plex
Timeline 2022-2024

In partnership with CMHC and Mushkegowuk Council, we design 2 new transitional housing buildings for FAWS. The 3plex had 1-3 bedroom unit and 2-2 bedroom units that were fully barrier free in design. The 4plex located on the same site had 2-2 bedroom units and 2-3 bedroom units. These transitional housing units were built to help women and their children escaping at home violence a place to live while new housing was secured for them. The project was part of the MMIWG Act and 1 of many transitional housing developments occurring across the country. FAWS Transitional Housing was completed ahead of schedule, slightly above budget due to additional requirements, the best square footage to cost of any of the transitional housing project, and first to be completed in Canada with a recognition award granted. The project’s success has lead to further women’s shelter projects that aid the first nation communities.
